Night Surge

Daytime is for planning. Nighttime is for the brave. When the sun goes down, the whole island shifts into Night Surge — loot gets richer, the infected get bolder, and the weather can turn against you. Survive until dawn and it pays.

When Night Falls

Night Surge is a whole-map event that runs across Original's roughly 15-minute night, after a roughly 55-minute day. It isn't a loot piñata at one monument — it changes the island. You'll get a NIGHT SURGE alert and an audio cue when it kicks off, telling you rare supplies are surfacing and the infected are stirring.

The bargain is simple: better loot in exchange for more danger. Nights are the right time to push monuments and fill your bags — if you can handle what the dark brings with it.

What Changes at Night

The moment the surge starts, three things happen across the island at once:

  1. Loot gets richerGround loot across the map's scavenging routes gets a real boost, and there's a small chance for a spot to roll a better-than-normal loot table. Military crates get hotter too (more on that below).
  2. The infected press inExtra infected drift toward monuments through the night — a steady, capped pressure rather than one giant swarm. The places worth looting are also the places getting more dangerous.
  3. The weather can turnSome nights bring rolling storms and fog — and, rarely, a genuinely nasty blackout storm. It sets the mood, cuts your visibility, and reminds you that you're a long way from safe.
One big night event, not twoWhile a Night Surge is running, the game holds back the automatic sunset horde so the two don't stack into one unfair mess. The surge is the night's headline event.

Better Loot

This is why you go out after dark. During a surge:

  • Scavenging routes get a tiered bump — the loot on the map's ground-loot routes gets denser, with the biggest lift on the higher-tier routes.
  • Military crates get a bounded bonus. Elite, hackable and oil-rig-tier crates have a chance at an extra roll during the surge — capped, so it's a real reward without flooding the server with endgame gear.
  • No fake treasure markers. Night Surge doesn't spawn glowing cache boxes — the reward is that the loot already out in the world is simply better while it's dark. Go get it.
Safe routes stay safe (and normal)The Outpost, the fishing village, train tunnels and cave loot are deliberately left out of the boost. You can't just farm a safe zone at night — the reward lives out where the infected are.

Rising Danger

The infected pressure during a surge is real but capped — it's tuned to feel tense, not impossible. Infected build up around monuments in small bursts rather than one apocalyptic wall, and they're kept away from safe zones. When the surge ends at dawn, the extra night infected are cleaned up.

Weather is the wild card. Most surges are clear or lightly overcast; some bring a "thin infected overcast" or "cold moon haze"; and once in a while you'll catch a full blackout storm — the night that should feel genuinely hostile. You'll always get the alert first, so you can decide whether to push out or hole up.

Surviving the Night

  • Kit up before dusk. Carry ammo, a couple of medical items and an Anti-Viral — you'll be fighting infected in the dark, and a bite means infection.
  • Pick a target, not the whole map. One monument run with a clean exit beats greedy island-hopping when infected are massing.
  • Use the dark both ways. It hides them, but it hides you too — crouch, stay quiet, and let Walkers shuffle past.
  • Be home by dawn. Bank your night's earnings before a rival team catches you slipping. See Banking.
