Staying Alive
Four things can go wrong with your body, on top of normal Rust health: infection, bleeding, low blood and broken legs. A compact medical HUD next to your vitals shows only the problems you actually have, and a short chat line tells you what's wrong, what fixes it and where to find it.
None of it is a random death sentence. Every condition has a clear cure, most drop from infected corpses and medical sites, and the Outpost Medical Store sells the basics. The trick is carrying the right kit before you need it.
Infection
Get hit by the infected and you can catch the infection. This is the one condition that follows you through death — you cannot F1-suicide it away. Respawning pauses the symptoms, but you are still infected until you take the cure.
It progresses through three stages that get nastier the longer you ignore it:
| Stage | What you feel | The risk |
|---|---|---|
| Fever | Mild — a warning on your HUD and a slow drain on food and water. | Manageable. Cure it now and it costs you nothing. |
| Sick | Heavier food/water drain, coughing and screen effects, healing slows. | You're burning resources and getting louder. Cure soon. |
| Critical | Glowing infected eyes, strong drain, healing badly suppressed. | You can turn. Left critical while sprinting out in the open away from base, the infection can take over — killing you and spawning a Walker where you fell. |
Blood & Bleeding
Bites, bullets, blades and traps can open a bleed. Bleeding steadily drains your blood, a separate pool from health. Let your blood run low and the world literally drains of colour — your screen desaturates and tunnel-visions, and your health ticks down to a dangerous floor until you top the blood back up.
- Stop the bleed first with a Field Dressing or a Trauma Kit — otherwise you're pouring blood into a bucket with a hole in it.
- Then restore blood with a Saline Kit or, for a full transfusion, a Blood Bag.
- The screen desaturation is your loudest warning sign — if the colour is draining out, get blood in now.
Trauma & Broken Legs
Heavy hits and hard landings do lasting damage beyond the health bar:
- Trauma builds up from serious wounds and slows how fast your blood recovers. Clear it with a Saline Kit, Blood Bag or Trauma Kit.
- Broken legs come from big falls (and can be rolled by a rough revive). A broken leg lets you sprint in short bursts, then forces you to a limp if you push it — brutal when you're being chased. A Splint sets it and clears the limp.
Treatment Items
These are the tools of the trade. They look like reskinned vanilla items — and that's the point: the humble bandage is now a Field Dressing, and the medkits do real survival work instead of a flat heal. Click any item for full details.

The Medical HUD
You don't have to guess what's wrong with you. A compact medical dock sits beside your normal health / food / water and shows only your active problems — infection stage, bleeding, low blood, broken leg — each with a little severity dot. A critical condition flashes for attention.
On top of that, a short chat line fires the moment something changes: what is wrong, which item fixes it, and where to get it. Read the dock, carry the matching kit, and no condition on this list should ever kill you by surprise.
